The article discusses the global response to HIV and AIDS, a lack of universal access to HIV treatment, and criticisms levied against the global response to AIDS. The article indicates that the use of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has eliminated vertical HIV transmission and helped prevent HIV in injection drug users and serodiscordant heterosexual couples. Statistics are reported on trends in delivery of ART and the incidence of HIV infections. Administration of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (GFATM) is noted regarding HIV treatment and lives saved.
