Summary
Background: The treatment of malaria in endemic, low-income countries is complicated by increasing resistance to anti-malarial medicines and challenges in accessing these medicines. Findings: WHO recommends Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) for high cure rates and to reduce drug resistance in Plasmodium falciparum malaria. Parenteral artesunate is preferred for severe cases. Conclusion: ACTs are the recommended treatment for both uncomplicated and complicated malaria. It is crucial that treatment be used in combination and not as monotherapy.
