Summary

Background: Mpox (formerly monkeypox) has re-emerged as a public health concern in Africa, with the Democratic Republic of Congo reporting the highest burden. In 2022, a multi-country outbreak prompted the WHO to declare it a public health emergency. Findings: The epidemiological profile is evolving with new clades identified. Transmission occurs through close contact with infected persons or animals. Surveillance, vaccination, infection prevention, and health system preparedness are key response pillars. Conclusion: Africa needs robust surveillance systems, equitable vaccine access, and strengthened healthcare infrastructure to effectively respond to Mpox outbreaks.
