Summary

Background: The unmet need for family planning in sub-Saharan Africa is high. In Kalungu district, there is limited presence of the public sector and the private sector has little capacity to deliver family planning health services satisfactorily. Findings: Strategies to increase access include training HCWs, task shifting, community and healthcare worker integration, social franchising and vouchers, counselling couples, integrating family planning into other health services, and male involvement. Conclusion: Increased knowledge of family planning increases the likelihood of a person using the service. Availability does not necessarily mean utilization.
