ACRES (2021) Considerations for Improving HPV Vaccination Uptake among Adolescent girls in Mukono district; A Rapid Response Brief. Kampala: The Center For Rapid Evidence Synthesis

Summary

Background: Mukono district is grappling with a persistently suboptimal coverage of the second dose of HPV vaccination among 10-year-old school girls. Findings: Causes of low HPV vaccine uptake include choice of delivery strategy, fear of side effects, inadequate parental involvement, poor record keeping, and vaccine hesitancy. Strategies to improve uptake include awareness and sensitization, making HPV vaccination mandatory, proper documentation, and changing the delivery strategy. Conclusion: Low uptake is a consequence of multiple determinants and so, interventions should look to solve multiple issues. Focus should be on the whole cascade, not just the second dose.
