Summary

Background: School closure was one of the many measures implemented by the government of Uganda to enforce social distancing and control the COVID-19 pandemic. There has been increased public agitation for schools to be reopened. Findings: There is no one-size-fits-all model for reopening schools. The decision should be guided by country-specific disease epidemiology, surpassing the highest number of cases, inequalities from school closures, and schools' ability to adhere to reopening protocols. Conclusion: Each country needs to follow the local context of disease epidemiology and ability of schools to adhere to different prevention and control measures for COVID-19.
