Summary
Background: Target Malaria is a not-for-profit research consortium that aims to develop technology for malaria control. In Uganda, genetically modified (GM) mosquitoes are being tested as an intervention to eliminate malaria. The project met resistance from communities over controversies around GM mosquitoes. Findings: Much of the possible impact of GM mosquitoes on human health and ecology is still theoretical. Ethical considerations include possibility of modified mosquitoes crossing geographic boundaries, protection of humans in case of untoward events, and seeking informed community consent. Conclusion: There are few field studies and very little is actually known about the effects of GM mosquitoes in the control of malaria.
